During the course of creating new ideas to enhance standards of construction, Preston was recognised for the design and development of the Crane Erected Folding Scaffold, better known today as simply: The Preston Scaffold.

For this far-reaching contribution to the construction industry, Preston was awarded the BHP Steel Award (construction category) in 1987, and then achieved further recognition the following year winning the 1988 IBM Innovator of the Year award. These coveted awards helped raise Preston's image even further as a true groundbreaker in the field of construction innovation.
